CG wins HVDC contract in Canada

Ian Harrison, General Manager of CG in Canada announced today that they have signed a contract with Manitoba Hydro to supply one 450kV, 120 MVA convertor transformer. The unit will be built and tested at the Winnipeg, Manitoba facility and delivered to the Dorsey sub-station northwest of Winnipeg. The CG HVDC Centre of Excellence was opened on June 21st, 2011 during a visit to CG Power Systems Canada, by Laurent Demortier, CEO and Managing Director of Crompton Greaves.

CG was issued a letter of intent by Manitoba Hydro 3 months ago with a limited authorization to proceed with engineering and procurement activities. During those 3 months, final amendments to the technical specification and purchase order were completed. The parties sat down to sign the historic contract at the CG facility on August 24th, 2011.

The recent inauguration of the HVDC Center of Excellence in Winnipeg represents a springboard for consolidating CG leading position into the HVDC transformer marketplace. This transformer, when ready in December 2012, will be immediately placed into service at the Dorsey sub-station as part of the Bipole I transmission system. It will replace a transformer that is almost 50 years old. Part of the development process will include joint R&D projects with Manitoba Hydro on insulation and a certification program for a new series of HVDC bushings. The Winnipeg plant of CG has a long history in the supply of HVDC transformers and employs 220 highly skilled technicians, 45 engineering staff and 60 support and management staff.

“We thank Manitoba Hydro for the trust placed in CG. CG has made in the past years large investment in Manitoba to ensure the delivery of the most cost efficient and reliable equipment for the HVDC infrastructures. We look forward to working further with Manitoba in the development of innovative solutions for a secure and reliable Transmission and Distribution system” said Laurent Demortier, CEO of CG.
