Centre to be operational by 2012; Company aiming at global leadership in high voltage power products

Inauguration at the hands of CG`s Managing Director, Mr. SM Trehan

Aimed at enhancing self reliance in the global Power Sector, Crompton Greaves Ltd (CG), today announced setting up of one of the world’s largest Ultra High Voltage (1200kV) research centres at Nasik, as part of their Global R&D initiative.

Having achieved leadership position in the manufacture of high voltage power products up to 800 kV, this move to set up this Ultra High Voltage (UHV) research centre at its Ambad plant in Nashik city is a giant leap towards fulfilling its cherished objective of positioning itself as the dominant player in the Ultra High Voltage arena in the days to come.

Today, after performing the ‘Bhoomipujan’ and laying the foundation stone of this prestigious Ultra High Voltage (UHV) research centre at their Switchgear Complex, Mr. S M Trehan, Managing Director, CG said, “This is indeed a momentous occasion for CG and the research activities planned here would tremendously enhance the technological capabilities of CG in this advanced technological arena”

The company is making initial investment of approximately Rs. 40 crore to establish this research centre and will further augment the infrastructure in next three years by spending additional Rs. 20 crore.

CG has been in the forefront of technology development, fulfilling the new requirements of its customers in India and abroad. When the entire world looked at the Herculean task  of India’s 1200 kV development with reservation, CG was one of the first partners to have volunteered to take up this challenge of developing indigenously three major products required for 1200 kV research station being established by Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL), the largest power utility in India.

CG has been in the lead in technological advancements with their envious pool of talented engineers in India and abroad. Their expertise in this advanced field has already been proved by their indigenously designed, developed & manufactured 800 kV Power Transformer, Gas Circuit Breakers, Instrument Transformers and Surge Arresters & 1200 kV power products.

With solid foundation in design, development and manufacture of UHV products indigenously, this newly planned UHV research centre, which is an extension of their Global R&D centre, will enhance their in-house research capabilities to optimize the designs and upgrade the products and services. This research centre will be a centre of excellence for high voltage technologies, to develop new UHV products with enhanced reliability and achieve self reliance in this advanced technology area.
