West Weybridge 132/11kV Customer Connection
To accommodate a proposed increase in demand at the Veterinary Laboratories in West Weybridge it was necessary to reinforce the 132/11kV network at West Weybridge 132kV substation. This was achieved by the following methodology:-
  • Addition of a new bay of 132kV switchgear within an existing A.I.S. compound
  • Addition of a new third 132/11kV 20/30/40MVA grid transformer
  • Addition of a new 11kV switchboard to provide new supplies to the customer
  • Interconnection between the existing and the new 11kV switchboards
  • Addition of a new three transformer AVC scheme

A study was done to ascertain the feasibility of the above and along with equipment specification, full detailed design (including relay panel supply), installation and commissioning were undertaken to provide a complete turnkey project.



Barton Primary Substation
A very successfully delivered complete design and build of a new Primary substation to East Midlands Electricity adoptable standards. Equipment specifications and requirements identified at the initial discussions were fully incorporated into the project and taken over by the DNO on completion. The scope for CG also included all site installation work. This was the first 'out of area' contestable project undertaken by United Utilities.


Minsca and Dalswinton Wind Farm Connections
Both of these projects were undertaken on behalf of United Utilities within the Power network region. The projects were to design and build a 33kV grid connection substation to allow the export of power from two new windfarms being built in the Dumfries area of Scotland. CG undertook the complete design and specification of the equipment and closely interfaced with the civil designer and contractor. Along with the CG installation and commissioning teams, both of these windfarm substation facilities were connected and tested on time and to the satisfaction of all involved.


Stuart Street 132/33kV Transformer Replacement

Sutton 33/11kV Transformer Replacement
As part of a general upgrade and increase in capacity, CG undertook the Civil and Electrical design and installation of 2 new Primary primary transformers complete with the build, install and commissioning of new protection and AVC control schemes


Norton SCS Replacement and Nicap Upgrade
Norton substation was undergoing a complete Substation Control System upgrade including a NiCAP protection change on some of the circuits. CG was involved at every stage of the project from scheme and interface engineering to installation and commissioning. The project has been in progress from May 2008 and is scheduled for completion in 2010 upon where the entire new SCS suite will have been installed and the protection change at Norton and its remote ends at Lackenby and Osbaldwick will have been completed.


Power Network Controllable Points (NCP) Project
The initiative to reduce Customer Interruptions and Customer Minutes Lost led Power to implement an automation project on their Primary and Secondary substations on the Distribution network. Points on the network in the form of manual switches and circuit breakers were fitted with actuators which were then connected to a local Scada outstation and back to Control. CG teams surveyed, installed and tested the equipment and RTUs on the network to meet the significant project targets achieved and improve the CI and CML performance


Rochdale 132kV GIS Project

Goddards Green New Build Primary
Tie in to the old and build the new describes this project whereby CG is extending an existing L800 33kV switchboard and building a new 33/11kV primary substation for EDF. Civil works will extend the existing 33kV switchroom building together with constructing 2 new transformer pens and a new 11kV switchroom building as an additional facility within an existing 132/33kV substation. The designs are complete and the construction phase is now being progressed.


Bolney Earthing Replacement

Daines – Deeside Nicap Upgrade
CG was involved in the interface engineering on the protection change at Daines and Deeside. The project was the replacement of the first and second main protection and the circuit breaker control. The construction and commissioning teams carried out the site works which included the coordination of CG staff and subcontractors for the crane lift to remove2 suspended line traps at each end. CG undertook the site management, looking after the CDM requirements on site.


Central Manchester Primary

Beddington Pro-Logis 132/11kV Substation
Following an urgent request for an initial 24MVA 11kV network supply for a new industrial park/data centre the only practical way was to do it in two stages. The initial stage was to provide four temporary direct 11kV supplies from the local network onto a new 11kV intake switchboard to be distributed to the customer. Running along side this was the second stage which was to run two new 132kV supplies from the local grid substation and install two new 132/11kV grid transformers providing permanent 11kV supplies to the new switchboard. The project included equipment specifying, full detailed design, installation and commissioning along with SAP operational work. Also included was the manufacture and supply of a suite of control and relay panels covering 132kV feeder protection, transformer HV/LV protection, low frequency protection and automatic voltage control.


Milton Keynes Protection Upgrade
To reinforce the network supplies around Milton Keynes a cable was laid between two BSP (bulk supply point) substations which created a 132kV ring from a GSP (grid supply point) interconnecting three BSP substations. At Bradwell Abbey BSP two 132kV circuit breakers were added to create a two switch mesh. At Bletchley BSP a third 132/33kV grid transformer was added and two 132kV circuit breakers to create a two switch mesh. At Stony Stratford a third 132kV grid transformer and a 132kV circuit breaker were added to extend the substation. Full feasibility studies were carried out for all four substations including site layouts, protection and control proposals and equipment specification which included grid transformers, 132 and 33kV circuit breakers, current and voltage transformers, protection and control devices and ancillary equipment.


Stone 11kV Switchgear Replacement
Old oil filled switchgear continues to be replace on the distribution network due to manufacturers no longer being in existence and fault levels increasing over the years. A new 11kV switchboard has now been installed at this substation together with a new transformer AVC designed and built by CG and part of ongoing asset replacement works


Kearsley 132kV GIS Project
On behalf of United Utilities CG successfully provided the necessary design, project management, site supervision, commissioning and NGT interface services on this 132kV GIS replacement project. The scope also included the OHL and 132kV cable diversions together with the opportunity to undertake significant oil filled cable replacement works during the overall programme and circuit outages for both National Grid SGT and UU feeder circuits.
